‘If he won’t talk then you need to make him’
This is some advice that I was given the other night from someone who has ‘normal’ kids, honestly if it was that easy don’t you think that I would have done it.
I just smiled and said that its not that simple, whilst thinking ‘what an idiot’
My son is autistic and has been diagnosed as having verbal dyspraxia, so making him speak will have the complete opposite effect, making him speak, makes him think about it, makes his panic and concentrate on it, and then makes it harder for him to actually speak.
So no lady, I will not be ‘making him talk’ I will be encouraging him to communicate in whatever way that he feels comfortable.
If that’s by pointing, pictures or speech then as far as we are concerned that is just fine by us.
